James Kirkup's handwritten workbook, dated June 1953, comprises drafts of For the children, On a photograph of my father as a young man, Variations on a theme from the Song of Songs, and other works, as well as his miscellaneous notes and corrections. Includes one additional manuscript poem on loose, torn sheet in back.

James Kirkup (1918 - ) was born in South Shields, County Durham and educated at Durham University. The travel writer, poet, novelist, playwright, translator, and broadcaster has authored over thirty works. Kirkup became the first Gregory Fellow in Poetry at Leeds University (1950-1952).
